Hostel in Las Palmas or Coliving, main differences

Jam Session EcoIsleta Coliving

Comparing a Hostel in Las Palmas with a Coliving could clear some misunderstandings about these two types of accommodations…

Las Palmas city

Las Palmas is a vibrant city where many travelers arrive daily. Some are just passing through, but others seek to get to know the city and our culture.

Travelers are attracted by our history. The beautiful beach of Las Canteras, the gastronomy, the climate, etc…

The city has one of the best urban beaches in the world. Perfect for a winter escape, when low temperatures reach Europe. However, in Las Palmas, you can enjoy the beach in the middle of winter.

In addition, Las Canteras Beach and Confital Bay have extraordinary surf spots.

From very high-level waves, for experts like Confital, to waves where it is possible to learn safely…

Our climate is warm, the people are friendly and the food is amazing…

What is a Hostel?

A Hostel is a type of accommodation with shared rooms, you usually pay for the bed, not the room. In most cases, they have bunk beds. I know this is a big generalization.

They also have shared areas and services like

  • Bathrooms
  • Common and chill-out areas
  • Kitchen

For all this, these accommodations offer you the opportunity to meet other travelers and share your stay, trip, and experiences with them…

Meeting people is one of the main reasons to book a Hostel.

The length of the average stay in a Hostel is usually relatively short, weekends or weeks…

What is Coliving?

It´s a type of accommodation where you rent a single room, which can be with a shared bathroom or ensuite.

There are indeed Colivings that can offer a shared room, to reduce costs and accommodate more people.

You share the common areas, kitchen, coworking, and bathrooms.

It usually offers more services than a Hostel, such as laundry, amenities, and towels, included in the price, etc…

The reason is that the average stay in a Coliving is longer than in a Hostel.

We are talking about a month on average, and members work during the stay, it is a different kind of traveler…

If you look closely at most Colivings, you realize that they are workspaces first.

Focus on allowing members to work comfortably, from places to make calls, to coworkings.

On the other hand, the community aspect is very important, with community dinners, hiking, skilshares, etc…

Most colivings in Las Palmas are focused on remote workers, so a coworking area with good Wi-Fi is essential.

What Hostels and Colivings agree on

There are some things in which these two types of accommodation coincide and in others they are different.

Charming traditional buildings

In most cases, they are found in traditional buildings or houses in the city; restored or renovated for this purpose.

Community

Social and intercultural relationships between guests are promoted.

Community life and being able to meet people from all over the planet is something that both types of accommodation share.

Common zones

Shared common areas, where relationships develop.

The key to generating social connections is that there are meeting points where guests can meet, get to know each other, and collaborate.

The type of user

There are coincidences because sometimes there are remote workers who stay in a Hostel, but there are also differences between the guests of a Hostel and in Coliving.

In a Hostel you are likely on vacation, traveling.

In coliving, you are most likely a remote worker, you have to work daily. And in your free time, you enjoy what the location can give you.

Therefore, at the Hostel you are on vacation, at Coliving you are working.

For these key elements in common and because Coliving is still not very well known. Many people talk about coliving as hostels in Las Palmas, when they refer to Coliving they use the word Hostel…

Prices

In general, colivings do not usually rent for less than a week, although there are exceptions.

Hostels rent per night and are accommodations prepared for those weekend stays or even one night.

Colivings try to develop the community as a central aspect of their proposition.

Short stays are a problem since it is difficult to integrate and develop relationships when there is no time for them to flourish.

If you analyze the prices of both accommodations, colivings are not that expensive compared with some hostels in Las Palmas. They are even cheaper, as long as the stay is for a week or better yet a month. Plus you have the advantage of having your room…

Coliving in Las Palmas

In Las Palmas, the Colivings are houses renovated for this activity.

They are found in Ciudad Jardín, Vegueta and Triana or La Isleta. In all cases, they have individual rooms and work on the community aspect, with dinners and all kinds of activities.

In Las Palmas, most colivings are focused on Digital Nomads and Remote Workers. These communities are characterized by being quiet spaces where most of the day people work.

During the afternoons or evenings, dinners or community activities are usually held, and on weekends it is not unusual to visit the island, go hiking, or go out for a drink.

Atlas Hostel in La Isleta

In La Isleta, There is one of the best Hostel in Las Palmas, Atlas, an extremely dynamic cultural space directed by Manolo, which has been doing impressive work on social and cultural issues for almost a decade.

In Atlas, you can enjoy concerts, talks, workshops, markets, etc.

Reducing them to the concept of Hostel is a mistake since Atlas is a cultural center of constant innovation and learning, which works for a different tourism model.

I have had the opportunity to enjoy extraordinary cultural activities, concerts, and talks at Atlas and I recommend it to anyone who visits Las Palmas.

In terms of accommodation, they have characteristics of a normal Hostel, such as shared areas and rooms with bunk beds, for a very good price.

But what really differentiates them from other accommodations is the intense, varied, and very important community and cultural activity for the neighborhood.

Surf and beach

In Las Palmas, many Hostels are located in the Las Canteras Beach area. The location allows travelers to be very close to all the meetups, cultural and social activities that take place in the city.

Furthermore, the Cicer area in the Guanarteme neighborhood, next to Las Canteras Beach, is a neighborhood with numerous Surf schools.

Many Europeans come to learn Surfing in Las Palmas.

In this beach area of Las Canteras, you can comfortably learn to surf and have the advantage of Hostels for those who want to stay near the Beach.

La Ventana Azul Surf Hostel

This is one of the oldest Surf Hostels with some of the best reviews in the Surf area. It is a traditional house with an unbeatable location, next to the beach.

With an extraordinary terrace and kitchen, the space is very well designed for socializing with other travelers, and they work very well on the community aspect with countless activities.
