If you are asking yourself why so many people talk to you about Gran Canaria for Remote Workers as the perfect destination, well, you are about to discover the main reasons…
I truly love these islands, I was born in Gran Canaria and live here, in this piece of content, we hope to be useful for Remote workers researching their next destination…
Canary Islands
We are 7 Islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, next to Africa, far away from Europe, although we consider ourselves Europeans… Have a look at the map, we are a tiny little archipelago…
Every Island is different from the others, we share some common characteristics, but each one is unique…
You already know about our great weather, somebody told you that she stayed next to the beach and went to swing every day after work during January…
Gran Canaria, a bit of context…
Economically and politically we are one of the two main islands, together with Tenerife…
Gran Canaria is well known for many reasons, like…
- International La Luz Port of Las Palmas
- Big tourist resort
- The biggest city in the Canary Islands…
The island has like three important areas, with different vibes, cultures, and landscapes…
- Las Palmas city
- The North, including the top of the island
- The South
Gran Canaria is small and well communicated but if you don´t know the differences between the North and the South, could find yourself not having a great experience, wasting lots of time and even money…
Differences between High and Low Seasons?
Las Palmas city
Many Digital Nomads and Remote workers are looking for a city full of culture, nightlife, restaurants, beaches, etc… where meeting new people is easy and fun…
Being productive while having fun on the beach or at restaurants after work, was never so easy…
Las Palmas has many advantages for remote Workers…
- Las Canteras is an amazing 3 km beach inside of the city, where you can surf and sunbathe in the middle of January when Europe is freezing.
- Local community, local culture, if you don´t like feeling like a tourist, this is your place, we are very cosmopolitan due to the international port, everywhere there are people from all around the globe.
- Services, of all kinds, from restaurants to gyms, shopping centers, coworking, etc…
- The biggest Digital Nomads Community in the Canary Islands. Too many Meetups of all kinds with fellow Remote workers, from hiking to surfing, whatever you are into…
- Good and diverse accommodations, from Hotels to Bed and Breakfast and Coliving.
We have selected the following links carefully, and on every webpage, you can find important information about topics you may have questions about…
Useful links to prepare your travel
Live it Up Las Palmas
Before coming to the island join this Slack community, where you can find people, meetups, accommodation, and lots of helpful information about Gran Canaria.
Once you join. Ask anything you need to know… This is probably one of the main recommendations of this post…
Where to eat
There are many healthy options in the city, from organic shops to vegan restaurants, local markets, farmers, etc…
This post is full of information and links for those with not enough time to cook, for vegans, or healthy and conscious Remote Workers.

Sports, Yoga, Surf-
Are you asking yourself, can I do sports in Las Palmas, where, how? This is another post that can help you understand where can you get fit.
Most Digital Nomads do sports every day after work, one of the main advantages of the city is the offer of outdoor sports, many of them for free…

Coworking spaces –
With many coworking spaces all around the city, you will find the perfect community or the perfect space to be productive…
Small and big, with terraces or great offices. Most of them are concentrated in some neighborhoods and commercial areas of the city, like Guanarteme, Old Town Vegueta, and La Isleta.

How to meet people and have fun-
I´ll recommend again joining the Live it Up slack group, where many parties are promoted, and lots of remote workers look for other people to share a drink or go for dinner…
If you ask Remote Workers why do they come to Las Palmas?
I´m sure many will tell you because of the weather, but together there are gyms, the beach, coworking, culture, great restaurants, and community…
Why is easy to connect with other remote workers and locals in Las Palmas?
In general, locals are quite open and eager to talk and meet new people. I don’t know the reason, could be the weather, our identity, and culture…
But meeting other remote workers is also very easy, meet-ups of all kinds every week, outdoor sports every day, gatherings, parties…
If you are looking for a place where you can work and meet people, Gran Canaria is the place…
The North and the Top of the Island.
Gran Canaria for Remote Workers is not only a city. The North of the island is perfect for those looking for nature, rural culture, and local community.
The offer of rural accommodation is excellent and houses in the middle of the mountain or tiny villages can be easily booked on the Internet.
Not too many tourists live in this part of the island, and having a more local experience is easy even with less budget than in the city.
The weather in this part of the island in winter could be surprisingly cold in some places, even snow on the top of the island.
Can´t Miss in our opinion
Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga-
Roque Nublo is a natural rock on the top of the island, going up and feeling the power of Gran Canaria under the Rock is just something you won’t forget.
But I would like to suggest also visiting another Rock, called Roque Bentayga very near to Roque Nublo, this one has a museum and also is an archeological site, an Almogaren for the local canarios before Europeans started to arrive.
Museum Cueva Pintada –
If you are coming to stay in the North, most probably you are somebody interested in the local culture. I truly recommend this Museum in Galdar.
You will understand how canarios lived on the island before Europeans arrived to conquer us… Visiting the museum requires booking your place in advanced…
Enjoy the Northern landscapes
Hiking-
This is one of the main reasons some Digital Nomads choose to stay in small villages and rural accommodations in the North of Gran Canaria.
There are many walking trails for beginners or those with experience and looking for a challenge.
Beach and Surf –
The North Coast is full of small beaches, natural pools, and surf spots. These places are perfect for those who prefer more intimate places to enjoy the sun and the sea.
Most of the time, only locals go to these gems…
I´d like to highlight the local markets and shops, even locals living in the city go to these markets on weekends to buy good food, like cheese or fruit and vegetables from farmers…
The South of the Island
Sunny, very sunny, tourists all over the place, hotels, many of them… Maybe too simplistic but in a few words that´s what we have built in the south of Gran Canaria.
Until 1960 few people live in this part of the island, small fisherman villages and some farmers working hard to survive…
But then Europeans started to fly to Gran Canaria in big quantities to spend some weeks under the sun drinking a cold beer. Mass Tourism was born…
We have built something that is not connected with our identity or our culture.
Why you can choose the South?
If you like to stay in apartments or hotels with a swimming pool and an all-included buffet, surrounded by tourists lying on the beach, then this is for you.
Work can be done, services and weather are great, and in some cases accommodations are outstanding.
Don´t miss…
Dunas de Maspalomas –
Something worth visiting while staying in Gran Canaria, beautiful dunes, and an incredible beach to swim or surf…
If you are looking for a place to eat one of the best Paellas in Gran Canaria- we recommend Restaurante Los Porches in Playa del Ingles, near the dunes. They have been open for 50 years and the local food is excellent…
As you can see Gran Canaria for Remote Workers has something for you whatever you are into…
Communications and Transports
In Gran Canaria, the local public transport works very well, moving around by bus is cheap and reliable. We recommend this option.
Renting a car is also easy and sometimes not too expensive. Obviously for a group of friends who want to visit many different places on the island in one weekend is a very good option…
In Las Palmas city, you don’t need a car, a bike or bus are the best options, parking in some areas is quite complicated and you can lose time or pay a lot of money for parking lots…
Internet, WIFI, and productivity
Safety
In Gran Canaria, you can walk in the street alone at 3:00 am with your laptop and your iPhone, and feel safe.
Good Local Impact
- Remember to support local businesses, and eat local food in locally-owned restaurants.
- Be respectful of the natural environment.
- Reduce your waste as much as possible. Use public transport, rent a bike, or walk…
- Water is desalinated, make good use of this resource, as the process requires large amounts of energy.
