Sustainable Coliving

What drives us?

If we’re honest, what truly motivates us to build this sustainable community is the possibility of working toward a better neighborhood for our children.

In addition, we want to offer a welcoming place for all travelers who are conscious and want to contribute to a responsible change in our consumption habits.

The future is built today. We can’t continue destroying our land as if there were no tomorrow.

Our philosophy

Less is more…

How does our sustainable accommodation benefit you?

  • Reducing emissions.
  • Responsible and enriching activities.
  • More authentic experiences.
  • Support for the local economy.
  • Greater personal well-being.

Organic shop, next to our Coliving…

EcoIsleta is an organic store certified by the Government of the Canary Islands. We offer Km 0 products, as well as bulk foods and ecological bulk cleaning products.

We place great importance on organic fruits and vegetables produced by small farmers on the island. Something very hard to find in the city.

The store is located just a few meters from our Coliving. If you’re staying with us, you get a 15% discount on all purchases, as a way to encourage ecological and local consumption.

Sustainable Coliving

Our main purpose has been to build the most sustainable community possible.

We’ve faced many challenges along the way, and the implementation of many of our strategies to reduce has encountered serious difficulties.

We do not deny our failures, but along the way, we have learned a lot. We try to be transparent; we are not perfect, and we recognize that there is still much to be done…

Waste

One of our biggest concerns and challenges since opening our Coliving has been the amount of waste we send to the landfill.

Our goal has been zero waste, and working in that direction has helped us make significant progress.

  • We separate our waste into five different containers: paper, plastic, compostable, non-compostable, and glass.
  • We have installed a reverse osmosis system for the Colivers’ drinking water, which has greatly reduced plastic use in the accommodation.
  • We have carried out composting both within the Coliving and in collaboration with local community associations, reaching up to 100 kilos of organic matter composted per year at our Coliving.

Consumption and Waste Data from Our Community

At EcoIsleta, we have measured the amount of water, electricity, and waste generated by our community for years.

This data helps us reduce consumption and implement awareness-raising measures.

Here we show you a breakdown of the information we have collected in the Coliving over these years.

Table of waste generated over 30 days by 7 people.

Local Impact

If you’re looking for accommodation where you can integrate into the local community, this might be your opportunity.

We strive to create a positive impact in our neighborhood. This is perhaps one of our most important characteristics.

  • We collaborate with different NGOs and neighborhood associations, as well as educational centers, to promote regeneration and sustainability.
  • We visit a local secondary school to explain and discuss with students what this remote work revolution means.
  • We are involved in a community project to implement composting in all the neighborhood’s schools.
  • We organize tours of the nearby volcanoes and natural landscapes to explain the natural values of La Isleta.
  • EcoIsleta has signed and is part of the 2030 Agenda for Gran Canaria, participating in the territorialization committee.

Reduce

Reducing is the great challenge our planet faces, which is why it is present in all our internal communication.

  • In the Coliving, you can find empty containers to shop in bulk at our store.
  • You don’t need a car at our Coliving. You can do everything on foot. In addition, public transport routes for exploring the island pass very close to the house.
  • Sharing accommodation is one of the simplest and most efficient ways to reduce consumption in various areas.

Repair

One thing that sets us apart from other similar accommodations is our ability to repair almost everything in our Coliving. Repairing contributes greatly to reducing waste.

  • Our Coliving is a traditional house, remodeled and adapted to be a welcoming accommodation.
  • All our furniture, except for the chairs, has been handmade, which allows us to repair almost everything in the house.
  • We have all kinds of tools in the house to fix nearly anything.

Energy

Our accommodation is designed to help you use as little energy as possible.

  • We have solar panels that produce 40% of our energy.
  • The energy we don’t produce is purchased from a clean energy provider.
  • All our lighting is LED.
  • Various automatic light-off systems are installed throughout the house.
  • All our appliances are energy-efficient.
  • Our building has an energy rating of A.
  • Air conditioners are from the Japanese brand Hitachi, with a very low energy consumption rating of A.

Join our community…

Everything we do depends on the community supporting and backing this effort.

The future depends on communities capable of facing the challenges ahead, such as loneliness in cities, the need to share resources, or the obligation to collaborate to solve many sustainable challenges.

Activities we have organized

  • Hiking and awareness activities about the natural values of La Isleta.
  • Ravine clean-up activities.
  • Vegan dinners.
  • Composting and sustainability workshops.
  • Talks.

Eco-friendly

  • Some of our dinners are vegan, encouraging our Colivers to consume less meat.
  • We are a Sustainable Coliving open to remote workers and neighbors.
  • Our goal of connecting remote workers with the local community has led us to organize dinners where neighborhood residents are invited.
  • We also hold Canarian cooking workshops, where remote workers can learn about and connect with our identity and culture.
  • At our dinners, we do not use disposable or single-use materials.

Single-use products

At our dinners, we don’t use single-use products. We also try to ensure that most of the food we consume is local and organic.
