Why did we write this guide?
Every year, many new members join our community who have never experienced coliving before.
This often means they arrive in the community with some uncertainty, and they usually spend the first week understanding how the dynamics work.
We have written this page to help you understand how a coliver can easily integrate into our community.
It’s very important to understand that in a coliving you are not a customer paying for a service, responsibility is shared. You shouldn’t come just to consume a space.
What is Coliving?
For us, coliving is a community. That means a place where we care for each other, support one another, and keep communication flowing. We have values we live by to coexist together.
What does it mean to be a Good Coliver at EcoIsleta?
Considering that we are a community, you should ask yourself a few questions before deciding to join our coliving…
Do I want to participate in the activities proposed by the community?
Do I want to collaborate with the other people I’m going to live with?
Do I want to spend time with other members of the community?
These questions are essential to know whether you will integrate into the community…
Think about them carefully, and if you don’t feel you have the energy to get involved and participate, that’s okay… Maybe it’s not the right time to book yet, maybe you should wait a little longer…
Principles of Coexistence at EcoIsleta Coliving…
Here we explain some of the basic principles that should guide your participation during your stay in our community…
Generosity
It is essential for the community, your integration, and your ability to fully experience the sense of community in a coliving depend greatly on it.
Generosity in sharing your knowledge, generosity in sharing a glass of wine, generosity in listening to another member’s problems even when you have your own struggles…
Contribute
How can I support the community?
What can you do so that everyone can learn something from you?
How can we enjoy that delicious food from your country that only you know how to make?
It’s not about organizing an event for 100 people, but about small gestures…
A community works when we all contribute. Contribute by helping others understand themselves, contribute with your experience…
Listening
In the world we live in, listening is a forgotten human quality, hard to find and very difficult to cultivate.
But in a community, listening is almost more important than asserting your ideas… Listening with empathy, listening to help…
Transparent, fluid, and honest communication begins with active and attentive listening.
Be Humble
In a world where we all try to be the richest and most powerful people, humility has a hard time finding a place.
But without humility, no community can be built. Humility is needed to respect ideas different from your own.
Humility to respect diversity, and especially to accept the possible “uncomfortable” habits of someone who comes from a continent and culture totally different from yours.
Humility to accept and not judge…
Participate
Participation turns members into protagonists, not spectators or consumers of experiences. By participating, you become part of the community; otherwise, you become an observer.
If you don’t feel you have the energy to take part in activities, outings, and support other members’ proposals, it will be difficult for you to integrate.
Participate in dinners, conversations, share breakfast, or a simple cup of tea…
How does our community benefit you?
If you surround yourself with people who share these values, living in our community can be truly transformative.
More than 90% of our members say in our exit satisfaction survey that they are happier after living in our coliving…
It’s simple: being surrounded by creative, open-minded, and generous people makes it possible to bring out the best version of ourselves.
And What about the Coliving?
On the other hand, at EcoIsleta, we have the obligation to fulfill our commitment.
- Common and private spaces in perfect condition.
- Facilitating meetings and moments of connection.
- Ensuring the enforcement of clear community rules.
The community cannot exist if colivers spend their energy in arguments because basic services are not working, or in conflicts because nobody enforces the rules of coexistence…
EcoIsleta must do its part, and the coliver must do theirs so that the sense of community can exist…
If this resonates with you, our community might be an option worth considering for your next adventure in the Canary Islands…
