That is where sustainable communities come<\/span><\/strong> into play as the key to fostering a harmonious coexistence between humans and the environment through collective commitment and mutual support to create a better future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eco Isleta Coliving is on its own mission to build a safe and inspiring environment<\/strong> <\/span>where sustainable communities thrive. Working hard every day to bring people together around a mutual goal, as well as introducing and educating those who don\u2019t know much about sustainability, Eco Isleta has already become a place under whose roof sustainability is not a topic that scares us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are Sustainable communities?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the past few years, sustainable communities have emerged as powerful agents of change, addressing pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges that confront our global society. At their core, sustainable communities embody a commitment to sustainable practices<\/span><\/strong> that strive to achieve a balance between human needs and the well-being of the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communities like these recognize the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic factors, and emphasize the importance of reducing carbon footprints<\/strong>, conserving resources<\/strong>, promoting social equity<\/strong>, fostering community engagement<\/strong>, and nurturing local economies<\/strong><\/span>. By embracing these principles, communities like these aim to create environments that are resilient, inclusive, and environmentally responsible, as a collective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With voices that hold more power than those of individual practitioners, sustainable communities educate the world around them<\/span><\/strong> on how sustainable practices can address the challenges of climate change, resource depletion, social inequity, and economic instability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, of course, with the world not seizing to come up to challenges and the urgency to confront them intensifies, the importance of sustainable communities continues to grow, providing inspiration and practical solutions for more and more people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Components of sustainable community<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even though there are many perspectives on what sustainable communities are and what they need to encompass, what is sure is communities like these take a holistic approach to sustainability, considering a range of interconnected components and human aspects<\/span><\/strong> to create a harmonious and resilient living environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, let\u2019s take the list of components adopted from the Egan review and EU Bristol Accord (Office of the Deputy … 2003; Roberts and Jeffrey 2006). According to this list, there are 8 components of sustainable communities<\/span><\/strong>. These components represent all the aspects of human life and societies that should be taken into consideration when building sustainable communities. According to this list, these aspects are governance<\/strong>, transportation and connectivity<\/strong>, services<\/strong>, social and cultural aspects<\/strong>, environmental aspects<\/strong>, housing<\/strong>, economy<\/strong><\/span>, and equity<\/span><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, on a smaller scale, such as in a coliving space, governance, accessibility, education, and balance become imperatives. On a smaller scale such as coliving<\/span><\/strong>, the components of sustainable communities encompass energy efficiency<\/strong>, waste management<\/strong><\/span> such as recycling, composting, and minimizing waste generation, promoting public transit<\/strong>, cycling<\/strong>,<\/span> and walking to reduce reliance on fossil fuels<\/span><\/strong>, social cohesion to foster community engagement, inclusivity, and equitable access to resources and services, and supporting local economies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating sustainable community<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To create a sustainable community, community engagement becomes crucial. The focus should be on encouraging active participation<\/strong>, collective ownership of initiatives<\/strong>, and collaborative decision-making<\/strong><\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will empower members to contribute with their diverse perspectives, enhancing the inclusivity and effectiveness of sustainable community projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long-term planning is essential for creating a roadmap that prioritizes sustainability goals<\/span><\/strong> and balances the needs of current and future generations. Setting up rules and educating members from day 1 is a must.
